Where 2.0 Entries and Winner
Last week I offered a freepass to O’Reilly’s Where2.0 Conference to a randomly selected reader who replied withideas for mashups they’d most like to see or be most afraid to see.The most afraid to see struck a nerve, especially given the recentpress about hackers andmashups.
Here’s a sampling of the responses:
- Elaine Nelson: Mashup I’d be afraid to see: flickr datacombined with google maps (satellite photos?!) to display path ofpicture-taking. Maybe combined with google/yahoo calendar to showwhere you were supposed to be, but ended up at instead.
- Patrick Tufts: In the category of “Mashups I’d be most afraidto see,” I’d like to suggest a Yelp + Google Maps + Craigslistcombination where restaurant patrons who have too much food canpost it to Craigslist and reach an audience of people who wouldlike a free meal. The resulting company, leftovers.com, would havethe hottest IPO this side of eBay.
- Joseph Hunkins: TheTravel Holy Grail Mashup with city information from Wikipedia;pictures of the city using the Flickr API; road Cameras from stateDOTs over Google Maps; weather/traffic information from YahooTraffic; geolocated blog content using the upcoming technorati APIand/or existing blog/map mashes, and onboard navigationintegration.
The initial winner was Andrew Bidochko, the creator of the veryuseful MapBuilder.net tool that makes it easy tomake Google Maps mashups. But he wasn’t able to make it on shortnotice and generously offered his ticket to fellow mashup developerJeff Marshall, creator of excellent mashups like Hot-or-Not + GoogleMaps and RealEstateFu.
The conference starts tomorrow in San Jose and should be quiteinteresting.

Leak Monitor
Catch your memory-leaking extensions with Leak Monitor

Firefox extension Leak Monitor keeps an eye out for memory leaks in Firefox, alerting you each time an extension has sprung a leak.
Although Leak Monitor is geared toward developers, it's not too difficult to wade through the leak alert and find out what extensions are causing the most problems; for example, I was surprised to find that my Adblock extension seemed to have a pretty steady memory leak. You probably won't want to leave the Leak Monitor running all the time, but it's a good way to hunt down a leaky extension if, like me, you find your Firefox memory usage has somehow crept up to 500MB in the course of a day and you suspect that an extension or two might be at fault.
